Whole-Rock Analysis
Samples are totally dissociated by fusion with an alkaline salt, then
dissolution in a mineral acid. The resulting solution is analyzed for the
major oxide-forming elements, and the results are expressed as oxides.
Loss-on-ignition is determined gravimetrically and used to calculate
the total percentage of the sample in the elements reported.

~0.15g subsample of the analytical pulp is fused with
lithium metaborate at 1,000°C and dissolved in nitric acid. Major
elements are determined by ICP-OES. Iron is reported as total iron.
